Introduction: Word Ambassadors: Prayers and Poetry

Mark 16:15, “And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation.’”

In previous series as we have been reading Scripture to understand how we can respond to Paul’s call “to lay aside the old self…and put on the new self,” we have looked at turning away from the world’s ways, beginning discipleship, and stepping into a life of faith. Now  in this new series we examine what it means to be sent back into the world as Jesus said, only now as ambassadors for God. How does He define the role of envoy or messenger of His words? What does He mean by all the world and the whole creation?

We are familiar with the concept of apprenticeship where a person will study under a Master Craftsman until deemed ready to venture out on their own—now as an experienced, capable, and polished expert ready to train others.

But God gave this charge to Israel when they were still struggling to become a nation and still considered an infant from the world’s perspective: “Sing to the Lord, bless His name; Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day. Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.” Psalm 96:2-3 NAS

Jesus sends His overwhelmed disciples out after a few years of relationship with Him when they got almost everything He taught them confused. He gave them one strong word of counsel: Wait for the Holy Spirit, and one promise: He would be with them always until the end of days.

On his missionary journeys Paul often left a new group of believers as witnesses and ambassadors after only a few weeks and in some instances a few days. How? What could they possibly have to share? Often we stumble over words within our own families.

Israel also struggled to understand this new role as they entered the Promised Land in the Book of Joshua. New Christians wrestled with a new form of church—a new shape to worship in the book of Acts, and believers are still exhorted to speak God’s words and His story today—sometimes under great deprivation and battle. Revelation warns us of corrupted churches and insidious values.

His story. To us and through us to others by His Holy Spirit. His words. Whether we’ve only known Jesus for a few days or for decades. We share His life changing words that we have seen and touched and felt personally—even when we mess up—maybe especially when we mess up.

This study unfolds as stories of decision and indecision, small personal choices and large public commitments, silent personal prayers and strong battle armor. Mondays we will reflect on a Scripture passage. Wednesdays we'll consider meditative questions. Fridays we'll respond with poetry.

Thank you for continuing the journey. As you discover your own questions and insights, prose and prayers, please share.

Lord, please speak Your words in our hearts and souls and thoughts so that we may always be ready to give Your words of truth and hope and grace as You send us into everyday living.

Psalm of Worship: Psalm 146:5-9

Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
Whose hope is in the Lord their God,
Who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them;
Who keeps faith forever;
Who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphans and widows.”

Reflection Author: Faith Seeds: Prayers and Poetry

Reflection Questions

1.     How do you feel about the idea of Jesus as your author in your life? Is that a comfort, a challenge, or a concern?

2.     What possibilities would you be looking for eagerly if you knew Jesus wrote words just for you?

3.     Is it a relief to think that you can give over your weak areas of faith and ask Him for a revision?

Share: What do you consider to be your best faith story ever so far?

Faith Seeds: Prayers and Poetry

Instructions

            No wonder children become confused

when encouraged to be amused by

            comics and cartoons and yet

            admonished to remember

            it’s only pretend.

            Stories, movies, theater all

            make believe.

Next we wonder why as they grow

scoff at faith stories, analyze each

by cynicism. Can maybe see only

            momentary fragments, glimpses

            of gift, question eternity.

            Resurrection life beyond comprehension,

            promises blemished by facts.

            Need to capture creation’s beauty,

            with fresh imagination.  Life anew

            fresh from decay, seasons change,

            discover  soul heritage  in

            breathless histories.

            Imagination and reality build bridges,

            connect the impossible.

Faith Seeds: Prayers and Poetry

Hebrews 11:22, “By faith, Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his burial.”

Were some listeners tempted to scoff at an old man’s imagination? Think of it as pure fantasy. Or did some remember the stories of Jacob’s dreams when young, or his prophecies when in jail, and wonder. What parts of those old stories were totally real and what parts were around the campfire embellishment to entertain children?

Joseph’s actions at his death re-emphasized the truths he sustained throughout his life. He held onto his youth-filled visions God had given him. He endured betrayal, slavery and jail and saw it as God turning to good what men had intended for evil.

Then, despite experiencing the opposite in success and power, Joseph never forgot where his true inheritance lay. He saw himself as God’s servant and as one of His children.

Yesterday I heard a sermon by Rev. Efrem Smith who suggested that today the Christian community should consider being an honest and vibrant movie trailer for God’s story. Joy for what has been given, and anticipation for what is yet to come.

Joseph left his people an Old Testament version of an upcoming attraction—not to be missed. Joseph recognized and witnessed that his death was not an end, but only a piece in progress, and he pointed to God’s story as the lifeline. In God’s story absolute impossibles are real.

Lord, please do not let despair or acclaim pull us from Your purposes in our heart motives or our action directions. Help us to “keep our eyes fixed on you” and remain as firmly grounded in faith as Joseph, regardless of circumstances.

Psalm of Worship: Psalm 145: 13, 15

“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations.”

“The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season.”

Kingdom Manna

Yoke

Mark 4:11, And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables;”

Secrets. Whispered murmurings. Hidden knowledge. Confidences. Entrusted to family, close friends, familiar associates.

Waiting for the right time or right motives to be shared. Kept in silence that a surprise not be accidentally spilt. Kept in the open with all aware except the uninitiated.

Seekers ask questions, probe clues, and work the information like pieces in a puzzle. Joyous when formed into a whole. Doubts evaporate. Confusion makes sense. Satisfied accomplishment for a mystery revealed.

When You chose to share Your secrets Lord, You planted Your words for all mankind. Earth and sky and sea proclaim You. Truth and love and justice describe You. Jesus mirrors You.

Stories share You. From ancient days to future possibilities. Available. Speak Your words within me too, I pray, that I may hear Your truths with Your language. May I be committed to search and to whisper prayers. To understand Your parables. To listen to Your voice.

Psalm of Worship: Psalm 78:2

I will open my mouth in a parable;

I will utter dark sayings from of old,

Tabernacle

Tabernacle Introduction

Emmanuel—God with us! Words that we hold with joy and praise, especially in this season as we prepare to come to receive God’s story anew.

It continues to amaze me how our God always goes before us preparing our way even when we don’t see and possibly never recognize His words or His images. Sometimes they come in whispers or metaphors, songs and parables, and we are moving too fast to pause and listen. Yet He writes them into our lives just as He wrote His word into the tabernacle for Israel. His house of worship filled with symbols and word pictures to prepare His people for the day when the sanctuary would live within hearts.

John 1:14, “The Word became flesh and dwelt [or tabernacled] among us”

So for a while we’ll ponder the Tabernacle, then and now, to listen for new insights. I hope you’ll share yours with me.
