Grace: 1 John: Prayers and Poetry

                Grace

                Darkness lingers
                within and without
                watching for
                deceit and danger.

                To undo His gift of
                fellowship and love
                forever offered.

                To undermine restoration
                lies dissolved
                by truth
                bound by grace
                love is His foundation.

Psalm 27:4: "One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all of my days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, And to meditate in His temple."

Grace: 2 Peter: Prayers and Poetry

                Grace

                Today we walk on
                earthly paths a
                world of beauty and
                despair both a
                reality.

                Toward a future of
                eternity-a promise ahead
                sometimes beyond our
                comprehension yet a
                reality.

                Today a gift of grace.

Psalm 89:36: "His descendants shall endure forever, And his throne as the sun before Me."

                our Lord has wrapped

                of His grace and truth

                so we too can testify

Grace: 1 Peter: Prayers and Poetry

Reading: 1 Peter 5:12-14: "I, Peter, with the help of Silas, whom I consider a trustworthy, faith-filled brother, have written you this short letter so that I may encourage you and personally testify that this is the true, dependable grace of God. Stand fast in this grace. She who is in Babylon, who is co-elect with you, sends her greetings, along with Mark, my son. Greet one another with a kiss of peace. Peace to all who are in life union with Christ. Amen"

Grace

Thank-you, Lord, for Your ongoing grace to each one of us no matter how often we fail.

Thank-you, for Your gift of dependency and availability and welcome.

Please continue to show us how to live into Your grace as You lead--with courage and faithfulness; so that we may testify to others as You lead. And also to stand fast when we are confused or fearful.

Thank-you, for Your ongoing gift of peace and presence that never leaves us.

Please continue to teach us how to turn to You first in all circumstances and listen to pray as You lead us.

Please keep each of us walking on Your path only.

Your thoughts,

Grace: Perspective: Purpose: Prayers and Poetry

Grace

                                                Too often come to prayer

                                                in hopelessness

                                                anxiety dictating our

                                                heart instead of

                                                kneeling in thankfulness

                                                of invitation

                                                to Grace that listens,

                                                restores hope,

                                                offers joy throughout

                                                the turmoil.

                                                Guides by His perspective.

Psalm 18:1 “I love Thee, O Lord, my strength.”

Reflection: Grace: Listen: Prayers and Poetry

Reflection Questions

1.     Predestined—called—justified—glorified are all works the Lord does for us and in us. Which parts do you think we hold responsibility for as well?

2.     God has given us freewill. How does this verse confirm our spiritual journey?

3.     How would you describe/explain God’s call upon your life to a non-believer or to a fledgling Christian?

Grace: Listen: Prayers and Poetry

Reading: Romans 8:30

“And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.”

Have you ever had a situation in your life where you have so consistently failed that you’ve given up? Heartbroken.

God never gives up on us.

Whether we are listening, or not. Failing, or not. Moving forward, or not.

He stays the course with us and for us at every turn, every stage.

How often do we hinder or frustrate His redeeming journey for us because of our hesitancy to step out in faith and walk into the unknown in trust. In obedience to His plans and His timing?

Gift of His grace ready to sustain us in all circumstances, in all situations, in sickness and in health; His pledge that does not end at death but instead opens to a new beginning. Literally. Daily, now, and into eternity, forever.

With mercy and compassion He protects. He saves.

Lord, please continue to guide us, carry us, in Your Spirit’s power and enable us to take whatever next steps lie ahead.

Psalm of Worship: Proverbs 8:29

“When he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth.”

Redeems: Listen: Prayers and Poetry

                       Redeems

                        No condemnation.

Not a concept we often comprehend

as wounds sear our own hearts

as well as ours towards others

                        cheat, liar, ingrate

                        carnal, loser, imbecile

we toss out labels spoken or not

                        words true or not

                        to ease our own discomfort

                        to ignore our own limitations

                        by conceit and false control

                        bury our sins.

                        Yet He sees our stain

                        yearns to set us free.

                        In Him grace,

                        In Him forgiveness.

                        He paid our debt,

                        He redeems our lives.

                        No condemnation.

Condemnation: Listen: Prayers and Poetry

Reading: Romans 8:1

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

No Condemnation!

How is that possible? Every day we mess up somewhere. Even if others don’t see our failures we do. And depending on the chastising voices we carry around within us, or repeatedly hear from others around us, we know when we falter.

Factual—measurable—life consequences.

When Job’s life dissolved around him, his friends tried to help him discover the sins that had caused such disaster. Someone had to be at fault they immediately assumed. Our instinctive response is to punish. God chooses to offer each of us redemption.

It’s a difficult concept for our hearts and minds to adjust to and accept as a reality because we each know the reprimand we personally deserve on so many levels.

Yet, God says He does not condemn. When we listen to His words and His voice we hear forgiveness and mercy undergirding the accountability we still need to acknowledge. His love and grace restore us from a life lived within the sins.

So why can we not stop condemning ourselves, and others, with the same words of grace and understanding too? Instead, we often allow the accountability to become ongoing judgment that grows distrust and fear and suspicion and often hatred. We only recognize the outward stain of sin and, from our viewpoint. We see hearts as stained forever expanding the brokenness.

God’s words. His love. His river of grace sweeps all our prejudices of blame away like shattered glass. Instead we see through His eyes and the mirror reflects back hope. New life. New beginnings. We can take baby steps of comprehension of outstanding compassion.

Because of Jesus’ life sacrifice. He paid our debts. He opens a bold path to a new understanding. To now be able to truly listen to His words and hear their possibilities.

Lives that listen to an everlasting truth.

In Faith’s Check Book, author Charles Spurgeon says, “He who has purified us with the blood of Jesus will so cleanse us by the water of the Holy Spirit. … Cleansing is a covenant blessing and the covenant is ordered in all things and sure.”

To be cleansed, led, and refined by the Spirit’s discerning grace requires a whole new perspective from our human interpretations. It’s an inside-out comprehension that can often enable us to make bold steps of faith and insight. Towards lives that encourage us to walk with listening hearts.

Lord, today, whenever a word of condemnation forms against myself or another please remind me to change it to a word of prayer by Your grace.

Psalm of Worship: Isaiah 55:8

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord.”

Through this study Listen, of Romans chapter eight, we will pause to hear the Spirit’s discerning words. Powerful words that too often get buried under daily stress. Do we trust in the Lord? Are we willing to be challenged and changed? Even in seasons of silence? Job never did receive answers. When he met with God all his questions dissolved. Being with Him alone gave Job a new foundation.

Mondays we will reflect on a Scripture passage. Wednesdays consider meditative questions. Fridays respond with poetry.

Thank you for sharing in our journey. Please share as you discover your own questions and insights, prose and prayers.

Advent Interlude

“So shall My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I send it.” Isaiah 55:11 NAS

My plans post Thanksgiving weekend, after special time with family and worship community, were as usual for this time of year: to prepare for Christmas and once again try to find time to let the meaning of the season be an anchor in the usual busyness.

My plans changed that Friday with a trip to  the emergency room followed by admittance to the hospital.

My plans for this holiday season have been completely upended by the unexpected.

And yet as I've begun to adjust to this year's reality I find myself once again seeing and hearing Christ's gift once again as brand new, with the fresh life giving joy of a new born babe.

His entrance into our darkness in whatever form that might look like.

His SO unexpected grace that defies our sinful, selfish hearts.

His promises that are eternal, merciful, life giving, and fulfilled by His birth, death, and resurrection.

His Presence and hope upending our fears.

His surrounding protection of prayer and support of family and friends and total strangers that breathe mercy and care and time and understanding.

His understanding of how much we are broken. Of His poured out life for us.

Gift beyond measure. Grace beyond comprehension. Christ our Saviour is born.

Advent invites us to recognize the shadows and barriers we have set around God’s promises and reopen His call to pursue life under His influence. And watch our hope soar into new territory as we see His glorious ‘impossibles’ unfold.

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light.”

“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace."

Blessing on this Advent. Blessings on your new beginnings ahead.

Call: Word Ambassadors: Prayers and Poetry

                        Call

We are quick to call out

                        complaint—condemnation

                        put each other into boxes

                        good—bad, in crowd—out.

                        Grace declares

                        everyone who calls

                        on His name alone

                        shall be saved—

                        no other measure.

                        Love searches darkness

                        waiting to embrace

                        accepts all voices

that respond with hope.

Sacrifice: Faith Seeds: Prayers and Poetry

Hebrews 12:2, “endured the cross,”

When we see sacrificial acts given among us we are often humbled at the capacity of love shown. Especially when between strangers. And sometimes the question lingers how?

We get a glimpse of potential human compassion, of grace and mercy, and perhaps hope that when called upon we too can give beyond our measure.

Then we turn to Jesus’ sacrifice and that can become too painful to face. Because He endured His sacrifice for everyone. For all our sins. For my sins—the sin still alive and active in my everyday. So instead of gratitude I often turn away in shame and embarrassment that I have accepted His gift so carelessly. And miss His ongoing grace that restores—every time I ask.

Lord, please forgive us our part in Your suffering. Forgive our ongoing disobedience to Your healing grace. Instead of emotionally tuning out when we come to a time of sacrifice help us to care with Your heart and see through Your eyes of love.

Only in Your name can true love be given. Only in Your name can we become truly compassionate towards others. And recognize the truth behind the wonder.

Psalm of Worship: Psalm 72:17-19

“May his name endure forever; May his name increase as long as the sun shines;
And let men bless themselves by him; Let all nations call him blessed.
Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who alone works wonders.
And blessed be His glorious name forever;
And may the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen.”
