Wealth:By Faith: Prayers and Poetry

Wealth

Wealth receives a respected

nod. Abundance a murmured

awe. Struck by opulence

beyond ability deserves

distinguished note in history,

whether private or public.

A greater wealth though often

resented or ignored.  Cannot be replicated

or bequeathed. Stands one to one.

Almost impossible to comprehend

until own heart discerns by

choosing servant road

weather personal cost,

jeers, contempt, and

receives lasting treasure.

Psalm 104:27, “They all wait for Thee, To give them their food in due season.”

Reflection: Treasure:By Faith: Prayers and Poetry

Reflection Questions

1. What has been the most difficult abuse you have ever suffered?

2. How did it affect and effect your values and choices?

3. Did you become a more compassionate person or a more isolated person?

Share: What resulting attitude from that abuse do you regret holding onto? Why?

Treasure:By Faith: Prayers and Poetry

Hebrews 11:26, “He considered abuse suffered for the Christ to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to the reward.”

Treasure

Conflict, humiliation, chastisement, and arguments are all things we do not often actively seek out. Nor participate in willingly. Sometimes we even hide to avoid the possibility, both literally and emotionally.

It’s not only the discomfort of a shattered peace, but also lashes of emotional pain against our heart that can cause deep wounds of injustice and memories of rejection. It begins young with pre-schoolers and kindergartens shouting out words to each other as labels to show their anger. The words may be as ordinary as calling someone a sandwich, but whether the tone is intended to be mean or meant to be silly the words bring on tears. As we get older the slurs become sharper, whether racial, or national, financial, or religious.

Labels have power. Jew, Gentile, Slave, Free, Man, Woman, Rich, Poor.

The world restricts and Christ sets free. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.” Galatians 3:28-29.

Moses chose heart treasure over world treasure. Eternal rewards over temporary pleasures. Personal abuse over false security.

Lord, please give us the strength to measure our days by Your standards.

Your thoughts,

Psalm of Worship: Psalm 119:10-11

“With all my heart I have sought Thee;
Do not let me wander from Thy commandments.
Thy word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against Thee.”

Reflection Questions

1.What do you consider your greatest treasure in different areas of your life: personal, vocational, spiritual?

            2. Has God ever asked you to relinquish any?

            3. Why? And what was the result?

            4. Are you willing to do it again? Why or why not?

            5. Is there one area you find yourself holding back from?

Kingdom Manna

Hour

Matthew 13:52, And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

Memories pieced from fragments: a baby’s soft nightshirt, a birthday ribbon, worn denim jeans. A snip here and a rip there. Combined with new cloth, fresh appliqués and fluffy padding. A gift quilt stitched with love to commemorate a shared past, and beginning dreams.

We gaze at the heavens, a brilliant display, breathtaking every time. Formed in ancient days. Stargazers old and new forged together under God’s canopy.

Message within God’s word. From Adam’s days stretching onward. Founded on Jesus. Language multiplied into countless translations. Old truths: justice, righteousness, mercy, love. New opportunities. Fresh formed today.

Weave Your treasures into my life Lord, as I study Your scripture. Stitch Your words into my heart and mind and will so that out of me each day will come Your love.

Psalm of Worship: Psalm 33: 5-6

He loves righteousness and justice;

the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,

and all their host by the breath of his mouth.

Kingdom Manna

Treasures

Matthew 13:44, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

Tales of adventure. Tales of mystery. Tales of treasure marked by an X. They captivate our childhood. Empty the pockets of a six-year-old, the hidden box of a twelve-year-old, the journal of a young adult. All treasure.

What is our treasure? Where is it? “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” For what does my heart yearn. For what am I willing to give everything away. For what do I covet with joy.

Too often, Lord, it is the value of tangibles. Life, health, relationships, wealth, vocation, prestige. All fragile.

When will I seek Your treasure? Treasure that does not rust or decay or die. “Seek ye my face”, the psalmist prays. “Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” I think it’s the word strive that stops me. It sounds difficult. And yet I would gladly pour all my muscle into digging up the X. Maybe that’s the difference. Concentrated effort for a short duration or commitment for a lifetime. But the reward is Your heritage.

Teach me Your values, Lord. Take my heart. Turn it toward Your treasures hidden in relationship with You. All eternity.

Psalm of Worship: Psalm 16:11

You show me the path of life.

In your presence there is fullness of joy;

in your right hand are pleasure forevermore.
